About The Artie Award Archives

Welcome to The Artie Award Archives where you’ll find information on all things “Arties!” The Artie Awards were started  in 1991 by Anthony Chase, Theater Editor of Artvoice, an online weekly newspaper in Western New York.  The Arties were presented by Artvoice for the first 26 years.  WNED/WBFO radio became the presenting organization in year 27.

Currently, the Artie Committee votes in 20 categories to select the nominees and winners for the season’s productions at Western New York theaters. 

To be eligible for an Artie, an artist must live and work in the Buffalo, NY area, while a theater must produce work locally, primarily with local artists.

Most importantly, the Artie Awards Ceremony is a benefit, with all proceeds from the evening (along with proceeds from area theatres’ participation in the Red Ribbon Campaign) going to an HIV/AIDS related charity. 

The current recipient is ECMC’s Immunodeficiency Services.

For example, by clicking on “1990-2000,” you’ll be brought to a page consisting of Artie Awards info for the 1990-1991, 1991-1992, 1992-1993, 1993-1994, 1994-1995, 1995-1996, 1996-1997, 1997-1998, 1998-1999 and 1999-2000 Artie Awards.

I’ve put in all the information I have at my fingertips. I encourage you to let me know of any errors.

Also, for the sake of continuity, and to avoid confusion for those uninitiated in the Arties, I’ll be using the current names of individuals and companies even though their names may have been different at the time of their nomination or win.
